The Steve Batty Enduro race attracted thirty three competitors who headed out from the beach to round the pontoon as a north east breeze rippled the water. Four dolphins joined them, adding some pace to the field. Although the total distance of the Enduro format is almost identical to our standard races, since participants are required to swim, ride and run half the normal distances before repeating the process to finish the race, this magnifies the importance of being able to change from one discipline to another quickly.
The breeze was freshening as the competitors exited the water and began the first bike leg. Once again, it became difficult to take advantage of the downhill section to develop speed against the stiff north easter. Despite this, Troy Main worked hard to open up a 25 second lead over Ryan Wilmot by the start of the second half of the race. Despite the strengthening wind, he was able to extend this lead to 55 seconds, finishing the race in the very good time of 43:24, bettering his time from last year by 2:18. Ryan Wilmot put in a very good performance, slicing 27 seconds from last year's time to finish second in the time of 44:19, 34 seconds in front of Mike Strickland, who completed the race in 44:53.
Michelle Clinton worked hard all the way around the course to be the first female competitor to finish. She was 33 seconds quicker than last year's effort, finishing in the time of 49:40. Taryn Neville put in a great effort to complete the race in the time of 52:56, a whopping 3 minutes and 14 seconds faster than her time last year, to become the second female competitor to finish and Sandy Harvey dug deep to finish in 58:20 to clinch third place among the female competitors.
Welcome to Michael Banich who was racing at Doddie's for the first time acquitting himself very well by finishing with the good time of 48:43. Sean Canna took 41 seconds off last year's time, Josie Canna took 49 seconds off and Chris Millard improved by 31 seconds. Kathryn Hookham and Aaron Earnst reaped the reward for their solid training regimens as they both improved on last year's time by an amazing 4 minutes and 56 seconds and 5:06 respectively!. A mishap with the bike didn't daunt Alisha Williams; coming back after injury is never an easy thing, but she completed the race and is set for a good second half to her season.
