The first of the 2 long course triathlons tested out the 41 starters in todays race sponsored by the Dome. The 750 swim was the first challenge with conditions on the way back on the rectangular coure making it hard work for everyone. As if that wasn't enough a rather gusty easterly wind made the bike course hard work also. The 21.5 km bike course was followed up with a 4.5 km run. Thankyou to the volunteers who helped out with marshalling today and well done to all the participants who tackled the longer distance for the first time. It was testing conditions out there, very well done.

Who said we couldn't top the last race? Another record race saw 62 people enter the clear blue water at Madora Bay. Well done to everyone competing for the first time or second time even, and congratulations to all those who picked up spot prizes donated by The Athlete's Foot Mandurah. Roger has been a great supporter of the club over the last few years, so let's show that same support back. It's back to Halls Head for the next race, but I reckon Madora Bay is on the January calendar to stay. Thanks to ALL the volunteers at today's race.

A new year, a new course and a fantastic number of new people shook off the festive season to compete in Mandurah's Bikeman Triathlon the 3rd race of the season. The pressure was on to present a great new course in Madora Bay and the weather certainly did its bit with a calm flat swim, a fast bike course with little wind, and a slight breeze for the run. 55 people started the swim setting a new record for the Mandurah Tri Club. Well done to all the first time triathlete's on your efforts today and thanks to everyone who helped setting up marshalling and packing away. The course got the thumbs up from all participants, most of whom are looking forward to the next Madora bay race in 2 weeks.

ITU Long Distance World Championships
25/10/2009
On Sunday 25th October Perth weather turned on everything it had except the rain as 4 MTC members represented Australia in the ITU Long Distance World Championship. A howling easterly greeted participants as they started the swim making it tough work to the turnaround buoy. The bike leg headed out onto the Kwinana Freeway where the athlete's were reminded the wind was not to be their friend today. Then, as if a cruel twist, the wind dropped off as they started the run, with everyone taking full advantage of the water stations. Our guys had plenty of support from the club with many cheering them on (from the shade) on the sideline. Well done guys!

22.01.09 Cyclists Injured in Local Accidents
Recently, two club members were involved in local cycling accidents involving cars. One occurred during a local training ride in a group and another during a local triathlon. The athletes were lucky not to sustain major injuries however it could have been a lot worse. Whilst in both cases the driver of the car was at fault, it really hits home the need to be constantly alert while on the roads. We share the road with the cars and we need to be ever vigilant whilst cycling on them. As has been demonstrated in these accidents we can do everything right and still end up closer to the black stuff than we would like.
Below are a few simple things YOU can do as a rider to minimise the likelihood of an accident;
- Always be aware of the traffic flow around you
- Wear brightly coloured/visible clothing
- Make eye contact with turning cars or cars entering your line/lane
- Be obvious on the road by signaling and sitting up through intersections
- Don't assume a driver will read your mind. If unsure, slow until you know what they are doing.
- ALWAYS ASSUME THEY MAY NOT HAVE SEEN YOU.
Taking note of these simple steps will help ensure your ride is a safe ride.
Safe Training,
Elliott
